Program notes
Don’t miss an electrifying symphonic performance by the Verbier Festival Orchestra, followed by Rossini’s iconic Stabat Mater — all unfolding at the 2025 Verbier Festival. Under the skilful baton of Domingo Hindoyan, the orchestra performs Haydn’s Symphony No. 49 in F Minor, subtitled “La Passione” and composed at the height of the composer’s Sturm und Drang period. Structured in the style of a church sonata and likely composed for Lent, the symphony’s dark intensity sets the stage for the profound emotional depth of Rossini’s Stabat Mater. Exceptional soloists Sonya Yoncheva, Alice Coote, Sunnyboy Dladla, and Ludovic Tézier join forces with the Namur Chamber Choir in this musical setting of the medieval hymn to the Virgin Mary. At the Parisian premiere in 1842, critics reported that “the entire work transported the audience, the triumph was complete”, and it remains one of Rossini’s most beloved and powerful masterpieces.
