Program notes

"Without Bach, I wouldn’t be a musician," reflects maestro Leonardo García Alarcón, highlighting the profound influence the composer has had on his life and career. Under his skilful direction, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra joins forces with the Namur Chamber Choir and stellar soloists Ying Fang, Mariana Flores, Alice Coote, Bernard Richter, and Benjamin Appl for a monumental performance of Bach’s Mass in B Minor at the 2025 Verbier Festival. Though Bach was a devout Lutheran, he composed this final choral masterpiece in the Catholic tradition, crafting the Latin mass for the city of Dresden — the musical capital of Germany and a place where both faiths coexisted. Hans Georg Naegeli once called it “the greatest work of all ages and of all people”, a sentiment echoed by generations of musicians and audiences alike.
