Program notes

Every solo recital by French pianist Alexandre Kantorow is a special event—and this one from the 30th anniversary edition of the Verbier Festival is truly one to cherish! The 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition winner, who has gone on to worldwide acclaim and been described as "Liszt reincarnated," takes the monumental, Hammerklavier-reminiscent Piano Sonata No. 1 by Brahms (whom Kantorow plays as well as any pianist alive) and Schubert (including a selection of virtuosic Lieder transcriptions by Liszt, plus the tempestuous and virtuosic Wanderer Fantasy, a technical challenge even for the composer himself).
