Program notes
The internationally acclaimed Trio Pantoum takes the stage at the 2026 Festival Singer-Polignac to perform two compelling masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire. While Haydn is primarily celebrated for his symphonies and string quartets, he was also prolific in the piano trio genre, composing 45 works. A late-period work published in 1797, his Trio in E-flat Major begins with a stately, march-like movement, followed by a graceful and lyrical Andantino ed innocentemente, before culminating in a lively, sparkling German dance. In striking contrast, Mendelssohn’s second piano trio embodies the passion, drama, and virtuosity of the Romantic era. From its restless and impassioned opening to its soaring lyrical melodies and dazzling technical brilliance, this work — written just two years before his death — showcases Mendelssohn at the height of his creative powers.
