Program notes
At Berlin’s Funkhaus, virtuoso pianist Alexandre Kantorow and star soprano Regula Mühlemann dazzle in this stunning program featuring Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Mahler's Symphony No. 4 alongside Teodor Currentzis and his renowned Utopia Orchestra! Since his overwhelming victory at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, Kantorow has taken the classical world by storm and has even been hailed as “Liszt reincarnated” (Fanfare) — a descriptor that seems apt when you watch him in Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2, a profoundly moving and technically demanding “piano symphony” in four movements. Currentzis also leads his international festival orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, with Mühlemann lending her sublime timbre to its famous fourth movement. A program of exquisite contrast awaits: Kantorow's breathtaking virtuosity and soulful artistry illuminate the profound emotions of the expansive piano concerto, set against the idyllic and nostalgic, yet subtly macabre, landscape of Mahler's Fourth.
