Program notes
Celebrated Norwegian conductor Tabita Berglund brings her signature precision and elegance to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, leading one of the United States’ most acclaimed orchestras through classic Russian repertoire and a brand-new work by one of today’s most exciting young composers. First, lose yourself in the raw emotions of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, which walks the musical tightrope between the all-consuming romance and bitter rivalry that drive the legendary lovers to their doom. Next up is the concert's centerpiece: the world premiere of DSO Composer-in-Residence Sophia Jani’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, with the solo role performed by renowned American violinist and founder of the Grammy-winning Harlem Quartet, Melissa White. Finally, plunge into the vibrant Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninov, a mournful and dramatic swan song inspired by the disappearing Russia of the composer's youth, often counted among his greatest achievements.
