Program notes
The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra's performance at the illustrious Wiener Musikverein features Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. Premiered in November 1888 at the Mariinsky Theater with Tchaikovsky himself at the baton, the symphony is fascinating for its unusual cyclical structure, with one main theme recurring in all four movements. Highly critiqued by contemporaries as well as the composer himself, the work went on to become one of his most beloved symphonies.
The Malta Philharmonic's tour is organized by the European Foundation for Support of Culture.
