Program notes
Prizewinning French pianist Adam Laloum takes the stage with the superb Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg (Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra) and American conductor Robert Trevino to perform one of the mightiest monuments of the repertoire, Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2. Unique in its genre, symphonic in scope and sound — including a famous third-movement solo given to the cello, rather than the piano — this work from Brahms's mature period may be his finest creation for the piano, both beloved and feared by musicians for its complexity, difficulty, and profound beauty. Laloum's interpretation has been even further refined since his widely acclaimed 2018 recording, which Gramophone called "as crisp as newly laundered linen… an impressive achievement." Trevino also leads the OPS in Bartók's propulsive, folk-inspired music for the pantomime ballet The Wooden Prince, described by the composer as "a symphonic poem to be danced to," calling for the largest orchestral forces of any of Bartók's works.
