Program notes

At their brand-new concert hall, La Source Vive, specifically designed for exceptional chamber acoustics, the 2026 Rencontres Musicales d’Évian welcomes world-renowned musicians for two unmissable all-Brahms chamber programs. In this first volume, violinist María Dueñas and pianist Denis Kozhukhin open with Brahms’s Third (and final) Violin Sonata. Premiered in 1888 by Brahms himself with the great Joseph Joachim, the virtuosic sonata is more tonally abstract and thematically darker than his previous two Violin Sonatas written around the same time. Sensational soloists Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, Renaud Capuçon, and violist Timothy Ridout then join forces for Brahms’s sublime Second Piano Quartet. One of Brahms’s longest works, its four movements exude Brahmsian romance and lyricism. The elegant opening and dreamy second movement are balanced by an exuberant scherzo and a Hungarian-infused finale which brings this unforgettable evening to a joyous close.

Catch Emanuel Ax, Renaud Capuçon, and more in another exceptional Brahms chamber concert at the 2026 Rencontres Musicales d'Évian here.
