Program notes
As part of the 2021 Pianomania! festival at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, French piano virtuoso Lucas Debargue shows off the elegance and poetry of French piano music in beautifully chosen selections by Gabriel Fauré, Fauré's most famous student Maurice Ravel, and celebrated contemporary composer Stéphane Delplace. Among other impeccable interpretations, Debargue unveils the inner subtleties of two delicate Barcarolles by Fauré, a composer he seems to understand on a deep and intuitive level, and makes a triumphant return to Gaspard de la nuit, Ravel's infamously difficult and infinitely evocative triptych that brought Debargue to international attention at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition. His program concludes with the Prelude in C-Sharp Major by Delplace, a composer whose resolutely tonal music goes against the grain in the contemporary scene. Throughout the memorable soirée, Debargue demonstrates the combination of jaw-dropping skill and profound thoughtfulness that have made him one of the most sought-after pianists in the world.
