Program notes

Join the illustrious Järvi family in Pärnu, Estonia for a festival brimming with talent and enthusiasm—according to newspaper Die Welt, "these are simply musicians having the time of their lives." Experience that joyful energy at home through four exceptional concerts blending iconic masterworks from the classical repertoire and less frequently played gems.

Maestro Paavo Järvi conducts the Estonian Festival Orchestra during an eventful evening, filled with surprises! First, On the Ship of Fools, by Estonian composer Jüri Reinvere (1971), evokes the musical language of the last decades, which succeeded the atonality of the early 20th century. This style aims to follow in the footsteps of the late “ultra-Romantism”, of which Richard Strauss’s Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration) Op. 24 is the perfect exemple. Then discover a major work that portrays Romantism in all its glory: Berlioz’s monumental symphony for viola and orchestra Harold in Italy, originally comissioned by Paganini himself. Inspired by Lord Byron's poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, the work sees the concerto, the tone-poem form, and the symphony battle it out within a single piece, with Pinchas Zukerman, the most important viola player of his generation, taking on the role of soloist.
