Program notes
This year's Grand Chinese New Year Concert features the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra under the baton of Muhai Tang! Don't miss this fascinating evening of music rarely heard in the West, put together by Maestro Tang especially for the occasion, and presented live at the Philharmonie de Paris' Grande Salle Pierre Boulez!
Since 1998, the Grand Chinese New Year Concert has been one of the most successful yet unconventional events to visit Western classical music concert halls. Every year during the Chinese Spring Festival period, one of China’s most acclaimed traditional orchestras is selected to present a sample of the country’s native musical culture. From the guzheng (a plucked string instrument), to the dizi (a kind of bamboo flute), to the suona (a double reed instrument), discover the rich palette of musical instruments from this thousand-year-old tradition!
Over the past 21 years, the performing arts agency Wu Promotion has organized more than 160 Grand Chinese New Year Concerts on four continents. This year's tour includes 20 remarkable concerts on multiple continents in some of the West’s most important cultural centers: from London to Budapest, from Lucerne to Berlin, from Paris and Brussels to Astana and Tashkent.
