Program notes

The highly acclaimed Michel Dalberto takes the stage in the gorgeous Saanen Church as part of the 2021 edition of the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad! A renowned Schubert interpreter, Dalberto takes on two of the Viennese master's final piano sonatas, Nos. 19 and 21, both among his most profoundly moving works. Composed in 1828 during the last months of Schubert's short life, these works have often been thought of as a sort of musical last will and testament. Indeed, it is not difficult to imagine that his deteriorating condition came to bear on the plaintive mystery of the innovative final sonatas, brimming with bold chromaticism, extended development sequences, and turbulent pathos that cuts to the quick in moments like the haunting Andante sostenuto of Sonata No. 21.
