Program notes
Lionel Bringuier launches his tenure as the tenth Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège with a dazzling program of French symphonic music, joining forces with superstar cellist Gautier Capuçon. In the resplendent surroundings of the Salle Philharmonique, the orchestra enchants with Dukas’s sparkling The Sorcerer's Apprentice — famous to many audiences from Disney's Fantasia — as well as Ravel’s entrancingly decadent La Valse and Albert Roussel’s vibrant Symphony No. 3. The conductor himself describes Roussel’s music as “above all colorful and brilliant, but also deeply expressive in its slow movements and at times highly incisive.” Gautier Capuçon completes the concert with a stunning rendition of Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1, a work in three seamlessly connected movements that build to a fiery, virtuosic finale.
