Program notes
Two longtime friends of the Aspen Music Festival and School, pianist Jeremy Denk and conductor Jane Glover, team up at the 2025 edition for a performance of an AMFS co-commission, Anna Clyne's gorgeous piano concerto ATLAS! Denk, "a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs" (New York Times), takes the solo role in the thrilling new four-movement concerto, a "brilliantly colored musical scrapbook" (The Guardian) inspired by the monumental collection of the same name by German artist Gerhard Richter. After the break, maestra Glover leads the Aspen Chamber Symphony in Schubert's mighty Symphony No. 9, known as "the Great" for its grand scope and innovative style, almost lost to history but for the efforts of Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn to bring it to light decades after Schubert's death.
