Program notes

The dynamic Jakub Hrůša returns to medici.tv leading his impeccable Bamberg Symphony—this time alongside soprano Joélle Harvey in a concert that brings together Gustav and Alma Mahler with Wagner, live from the 2022 Lucerne Festival!

First up on the program: the famed Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner's beloved Tristan und Isolde, some of the most poignant, soul-stirring, intoxicating music ever composed. Next, Hrůša and his ensemble treat us to five Lieder by Alma Mahler, interpreted brilliantly by Joélle Harvey. These magnificent post-Romantic songs reflect the zeitgeist of the epoch that saw their creation: dramatic and somber, always with a hopeful undercurrent. Finally, the bright Symphony No. 4 by Alma Mahler's husband Gustav, characterized by neoclassical (even Haydn-like) undertones and charming folkloric rhythms and accents.
