Program notes

Where do composers find inspiration? Explore a program of romantic and artistic tributes that showcase how artists translate love into music at La Jolla Music Society SummerFest. A resplendent cast of soloists — including pianist Inon Barnatan, hornist Stefan Dohr, and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt — join forces with the SummerFest Chamber Orchestra under the baton of conductor Osmo Vänskä. From the emotional Romantic intensity of Schubert’s Auf dem Strom and Schumann’s turbulent third piano trio to the haunting minimalism of Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten and evocative beauty of Britten’s own Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, the concert perfectly illustrates how composers draw on personal devotion to inspire their art.
