Program notes
Henri Demarquette and Jean-Frédéric Neuburger join forces in the hilltop village of Mons, near Cannes in the south of France, to perform three major chamber works by Beethoven: the two youthful Cello Sonatas of Op. 5 and the celebrated A-major Cello Sonata, Op. 69, of the composer’s middle period. From the energy of the early works to the grand scope of the later masterpiece, this concert traces the evolution of the cello-piano relationship in Beethoven’s music, evolving over time from simple virtuosic pieces into opportunities for intimate conversation, dramatic tension, and profound humanity. Driven by a tangible artistic affinity, Demarquette and Neuburger bring out the richness of these pieces, alternating between moments of stately heroism, passionate emotion, and supreme tranquility.
