Program notes
Experience Handel's Tamerlano like you've never seen it, spotlighting Uzbek instruments and choir in a reconceived musical interpretation by Kirill Richter, and starring the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan alongside an acclaimed international vocal cast! Tamerlano was composed in just twenty days but remains one of George Frideric Handel's most highly regarded operas, recounting a personal and political conflict between Tamerlano, Emperor of the Tartars; Bajazet, the defeated Ottoman Emperor; and Bajazet's daugher Asteria, whom Tamerlano seeks to marry against Bajazet's wishes. The Uzbekistan Art and Culture Developement Foundation marked the 300th anniversary of Tamerlano in 2024 with this well-received production, which arrives at the spectacular Royal Opera of Versailles in a concert version featuring Jenisbek Piyazov in the title role, Juan Sancho as Bajazet, and Verónica Cangemi as Asteria.
