Program notes

Experience Bach’s Goldberg Variations like never before in this inspired, intimate recital by Thibaut Garcia and Antoine Morinière at the breathtaking Abbey of Solesmes! The great Bruno Monsaingeon’s camera captures the dynamism and finely established rapport of two of the most acclaimed classical guitarists of their generation, who perform their very own arrangement on a custom-made pair of guitars cut from the same tree.

NPR refers to the Goldberg Variations, originally published in 1741, as “a Rubik's Cube of invention and architecture” due to its intricate structure, an intimidating prospect for any musician. Before this recording, the two guitarists spent several days living like monks on an ascetic retreat in the Abbey with the aim of better understanding this singular set and its composer’s profound spirituality. Armed here with their unique instruments, an extraordinary artistic bond, and ample technical skill to realize the ambition of their undertaking, Garcia and Morinère give the Goldbergs a fresh new interpretation that makes this centuries-old masterpiece resound with all the warmth and immediacy of past and present.
