Program notes

Pianists Ferhan and Ferzan Önder perform works by Fazil Say and Steve Reich alongside percussionist Martin Grubinger at the Auditorium of the Fondation Louis Vuitton. At the heart of the program is the world premiere of Fazil Say’s Sonata for Two Pianos, commissioned by the Fondation Louis Vuitton.

Lyrical and filled with love for the Turkish city, the concert opens with Fazil Say’s 2012 “Winter Morning in Istanbul”. Say’s Variations for Two Pianos and Percussion (composed in 2013) tell a story from childhood. Galvanized by tragic events in Istanbul’s Gezi Park, Fazil Say created a trilogy of works, among them “Gezi Park I”, a concerto for two pianos and orchestra, performed here in Martin Grubinger's transcription for two pianos and percussion.
