Program notes
Don’t miss the world premiere of Doppelganger, a production that defies convention and reinvents the traditional recital performance. Globally renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann and his long-term collaborator, pianist Helmur Deutsch, join forces to bring director Claus Guth’s vision of Schubert’s evocative Schwanengesang (Swang Song) to life. The concert focuses on the psychological, isolated journey of a wounded soldier in the First World War. Commissioned by the Park Avenue Armory, the work stemmed from a conversation with its then artistic director, Pierre Audi: “he kind of gave me a blank paper and told me to invent something for this venue. And have Jonas Kaufman at the center” (Guth). A poignant voyage through contrasting theatrical atmospheres and affecting musical expression awaits.
