Program notes
Soprano Diana Damrau and tenor Jonas Kaufmann continue their celebrated collaboration with a new program of art songs by Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, supported once again by the legendary Helmut Deutsch at the piano. In this remarkable Paris concert, the two star vocalists alternate solo numbers and duets from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Rückert-Lieder alongside miniature gems by Strauss like "Zueignung," "Morgen!" and "Die Nacht" — an approach that shows the work of these two essential late Romantics in their most poetic light.
Celebrated for their portrayals of larger-than-life leading roles on the world's most prestigious opera stages, Damrau and Kaufmann here demonstrate their extraordinary capacity for subtlety and intimate dialogue as well. Damrau's velvety vocal colours and Kaufmann's heavenly pianissimo high notes are just a few of the interpretive qualities that make this recital, like their previous Schumann and Brahms outing in 2024, a must-see for every lover of poetry and song.
