Program notes
Experience the spellbinding sounds of the Spanish Renaissance and 15th- and 16th-century Persian and Ottoman Empires in this very special evening of music at the 2025 Festival de Granada! Composer and gambist Fahmi Alqhai — born in Seville to a Syrian family — and Iran-born setarist and singer Kiya Tabassian — who has lived in Canada since he was a teenager — bring together their two ensembles for a truly unique fusion of early European music with Persian and Ottoman traditional music. Alqhai's Baroque ensemble, Accademia del Piacere, performs in a simple viola de gamba trio formation, while Tabassian and his fellow three musicians from his ensemble, Constantinople, form a quartet. Let yourself be transported and open a doorway into history and culture that only music could open…
Also at the 2025 Festival de Granada, check out the Budapest Festival Orchestra's all-Mahler concert, conducted by Iván Fischer!
