Program notes
American bass-baritone Davóne Tines, whose thoughtful and passionate approach to his art is "changing what it means to be a classical singer" (The New Yorker), brings his acclaimed Recital No. 1: MASS to the 2025 edition of the Aspen Music Festival and School! Accompanied by superb Afro-Dominican pianist John Bitoy, the pathbreaking Tines unites a wide-ranging repertoire — from opera to gospel music to protest songs — in a recital that feels "like a sustained creative statement, almost a composition in itself." In everything from Baroque airs by Bach and Handel to poignant works by 20th-century Black composers Margaret Bonds and Julius Eastman, as well as contemporary pieces by Pulitzer winners Caroline Shaw and Tyshawn Sorey, Tines uses his magnetic stage presence and captivating timbre, "at once grand and fraught, potent and vulnerable," to craft a one-of-a-kind experience that interrogates themes of race and sexuality while pushing the boundaries of classical performance.
