Program notes

Annecy Classic Festival opens with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Jean-Claude Casadesus and Khatia Buniatishvili!

Annecy Classic Festival, a yearly event co-directed by Pascal Escande and Denis Matsuev, is on for a new edition. In 2013, it hosts one of the best symphony orchestras of Europe: the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, in residence until the end of the festival. Among the festival's headlines, we can notably quote Khatia Buniatishvili, Renaud Capuçon, Sandrine Piau, Gidon Kremer, Denis Matsuev, Jean-Claude Casadesus and Yuri Temirkanov.

On the 20th of August, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic is lead by the French conductor Jean-Claude Casadesus – founder and music director of the Orchestre National de Lille. He opens the concert with one of the Romantic repertoire's most singular yet iconic pieces: the orchestral version of Isolde's Liebestod, taken from Wagner's Tristan. Then, the orchestra joins forces with Khatia Buniatishvili for Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2. Khatia has a great knowledge of the composer's work since she has recorded them on the Sony Classical label not long ago. Casadesus closes the concert with Ravel's most popular piece: the heady Bolero.
