Program notes

Certain artists make a lasting impact on the world, both through their music and their humanity. Violinist Yehudi Menuhin is undoubtedly one of them. A child prodigy, he performed on the world’s greatest stages from an early age, alongside the most prestigious orchestras. Over the years, he never stopped reinventing himself, consistently captivating his audience with the richness of his playing, distinguished by its exceptional intensity and emotional expressiveness. Beyond music, Menuhin embodied ideals of peace and humanity, passionately advocating for human rights throughout his life.

Three concert excerpts in this collection showcase the violinist’s complete musical range. He performs Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, the composer’s most iconic piece with deeply lyrical melodies, alongside Ferenc Fricsay and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. He then joins his sister, Hephzibah Menuhin, in paying tribute to his teacher Georges Enescu with a performance of Enescu’s Violin Sonata No. 3, subtitled “in the Romanian style”. To conclude, the resplendent third movement of Beethoven’s celebrated Violin Concerto—a cornerstone of his repertoire—comes to life with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Colin Davis.
