Program notes

Join Raphaël Pichon and Ensemble Pygmalion as they tell the Biblical Christmas story through the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Across a triptych of concerts, they celebrate and retrace the life of Christ, guiding the listener from the Nativity to the Passion and onward to the Resurrection…

In this third concert, two lesser-known oratorios take center stage. The Easter Oratorio unfolds in vivid, theatrical dialogue between Mary, Mary Magdalene, John, and Peter, giving the work an almost operatic immediacy. The Ascension Oratorio follows the structure of an extended festive cantata, combining radiant orchestration with vivid vocal writing to portray the wonder of Christ’s resurrection. Through its jubilant choruses and expressive arias, Bach conveys the sense of hope that the event inspires in the faithful.
