Program notes
The Chamber Orchestra of Europe continues its celebrated residency at Esterházy Palace, this time alongside up-and-coming young pianist Eva Gevorgyan, who performs Chopin's beloved Piano Concerto No. 2! Composed before Chopin's twentieth birthday, this repertoire favorite proceeds through a mysterious and melancholy opening movement, a sublime Larghetto, and a propulsive concluding rondo with a wealth of musical ideas and memorable melodies. In honor of the man who spent most of his working life creating masterpieces inside the palace's walls, concert master Maria Włoszczowska also leads the COE in Haydn's "Farewell" Symphony No. 45, which derives its title from the witty stage direction of its final section. The program concludes with a Highland flourish in Mendelssohn's evocative "Scottish" Symphony No. 3, which conjures up pastoral serenity and cliffside tempests across four highly poetic movements.
