Program notes

When Saint-Saëns completed The Carnival of the Animals in 1886, he banned all public performances in case it tarnished his reputation as a “serious” composer. Published one year after the musician’s death, it has ironically become his most popular work. The supremely talented Kanneh-Mason siblings join forces with a host of stellar instrumentalists to perform the composer’s “grand zoological fantasy” live, complemented by poems written and performed by acclaimed children’s author Sir Michael Morpurgo. Opening the concert is a world premiere from Daniel Kidane: a celebration of Manchester’s Caribbean community and a reflection of his own experience at the city’s famous Caribbean Carnival. Revel is interweaved with verses by one of Manchester’s most celebrated poets, Lemn Sissay.
