Program notes

Revisit an unforgettable evening in the company of the beloved Bernard Haitink, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 92, leading the impeccable Berliner Philharmoniker alongside renowned violinist Isabelle Faust in a Beethoven-centric program—featuring the exquisite and the virtuosic Violin Concerto!

Opening the festivities is that sublime Sixth, a symphony in five movements that transports the listener to a richly imagistic landscape imbued with serenity, an homage to the beauty of nature: "No one can love the country as much as I do," wrote Beethoven in a letter to Therese Malfatti. Next, Faust takes the stage to interpret the Violin Concerto in D, a monument of the concerto repertoire and, in a sense, a love poem commemorating a happy period in the composer's life. The superb soloist succeeds brilliantly in conveying the work's scope and structure, all while demonstrating her considerable powers of expression!
