Program notes

Returning to the 2017 Verbier Festival after a 19-year hiatus, Sir Antonio Pappano leads the Verbier Festival Orchestra for one exhilarating evening in masterpieces by Brahms and Strauss. They are joined by the great pianist Yefim Bronfman for Brahms's majestic Second Piano Concerto.

Premiered in Budapest in 1881, Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major was an immediate success: one of his greatest musical creations, it has become a pillar of the piano repertoire. Strauss's symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben ("A Hero's Life") was the crowning gem of a decade of symphonic poems, after which he turned his creative efforts toward opera.
