Program notes
An unstoppable trio of gifted virtuosos — comprising world-class cellist Gautier Capuçon, critically acclaimed violinist Daniel Lozakovich, and award-winning pianist Alexandre Kantorow — share the stage for this exceptional chamber concert at Paris’s Fondation Louis Vuitton.
First up in an exquisite program guaranteed to delight chamber music aficionados and newcomers alike is Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor. Praised by Schumann as "the master-trio of our time,” the work’s memorable melodies, both in the violin and cello’s intertwining dialogues and in the second movement’s dreamy piano solo, allow the three remarkable musicians to demonstrate their carefully developed rapport as a chamber ensemble. Next comes one of Brahms's most beloved chamber works, his Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, characterized by rich, chromatic harmonies, unusual homotonality (with two movements in B major and two in B minor), and shades of both the 22-year-old composer who wrote the original 1854 version, and the accomplished Brahms at the height of his career who created the 1889 revision heard today.
