Program notes
In this stunning, open-air concert, the Dresden Staatskapelle joins forces with three formidable artists: piano superstar Yuja Wang, Paganini Competition winner Mengla Huang, and accomplished conductor Xian Zhang, who leads the orchestra in a superb program blending Western and Chinese repertoire.
Alongside effervescent pieces such as Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol and Horowitz's Variations on a theme from Bizet’s "Carmen," two more showstopping works showcase the virtuosity of the evening's soloists. First, Mengla Huang performs The Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao — one of the most renowned works in the contemporary Chinese repertoire — with effortless grace. Then, Yuja Wang dazzles in one of the most fiercely complex yet emotionally evocative pieces in the piano repertoire, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
