The church played a prominent role in Baroque musical life, with many composers earning their living through their roles as cantor or organist. As the opera grew and developed with a focus on a wide variety of subjects, the forms of the cantata and the oratorio grew in parallel, treating religious themes. Like operas, oratorios were dramatic and narrative-driven, but in keeping with their more sober, ecclesiastical context, were performed without the opera's staged, theatrical components. The best-known Baroque oratorio composers today include Marc-Antoine Charpentier, J.S. Bach, and George Frideric Handel.
