The complete Mahler symphonies

0 videos

It's difficult to avoid using the word "monumental" when we're discussing the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, as each one of his nine symphonies truly represents a monument in the history of symphonic writing — from the six-movement Third, the longest symphony in the standard repertoire with nary a dull moment, to the Eighth, the "Symphony of a Thousand," which calls for a veritable army of musicians. Discover the 11 works that make up Mahler's symphonic output: the first eight symphonies, Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) — composed as a de facto Ninth, but allowing Mahler to temporarily escape the infamous Curse of the Ninth — the actual Symphony No. 9, and the first movement of the never-completed Symphony No. 10.
