Program notes

At Paris's magnificent Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Dutch National Ballet presents an exceptional evening of dance to honor the legacy of the late Hans van Manen, one of the greatest neoclassical choreographers of the 20th century. Over the course of his long, prolific career, Manen created over 100 ballets, many specifically for the Dutch National Ballet, including the five gems performed in this stunning tribute. Featuring music by Bach, Beethoven, Benjamin Britten, Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür, and Ástor Piazzolla, Manen’s five masterpieces (Adagio Hammerklavier, Solo, Frank Bridge Variations, Two Pieces for Het, and 5 Tangos) showcase a variety of evocative dance styles and the full gamut of human emotions. From a spirited three-part solo dance set to Bach’s Violin Partita No. 1 to a rousing, tango-inspired piece soundtracked by Piazzolla’s Five Tango Sensations, this rich ballet medley has everything to delight fans of music and dance alike.
