Program notes

Andrey Kaydanovskiy revisits Tchaikovsky's famous ballet Sleeping Beauty at the Landestheater in Linz! In this bold version of Charles Perrault's fairy tale, Princess Aurora lives in a world shaped by hedonism and superficiality. Cursed from birth by the witch Carabosse, she is doomed to fall into a deep sleep on her sixteenth birthday. As the curse comes true, Aurora's subconscious emerges, and our heroine tumbles from this artificial world into reality, revealing the vibrant hues of freedom. With mischievous humor that flirts with the absurd, Kaydanovskiy offers the portrait of a young girl in search of emancipation. The legendary tale regains its freshness and explores the transition to adulthood, the detachment from the family cocoon, and the search for one's own identity. A charming nod to the red shoes of Dorothy, the iconic heroine of The Wizard of Oz, underscores the depth of the transformations that will accompany Aurora on her inner journey. As for Tchaikovsky's sublime score, it becomes a vibrant anthem that majestically celebrates beauty, love, the desire for freedom, and the incredible power that animates the human heart.
