Program notes
In a tribute to Arvo Pärt — one of the world’s most performed living composers — Czech choreographer and director Petr Zuska presents A Little Prayer, a soulful dance show set to many of the Estonian composer’s best-loved works such as Spiegel im Spiegel, Fratres, Lamentate, and Für Alina. On the stage of the Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu, Estonia, the dancers of the Vanemuine Ballet Company explore themes such as life and death, love, faith, peace, and freedom in “the story of Woman and Man, where symbols and archetypes reveal even the worries and hopes hidden deep within their souls.” Zuska’s deeply touching and expressive choreography captures the spiritual, poetic, utterly human nature of Pärt’s music, performed by the Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra and Opera Chorus, under the baton of Risto Joost.
