Waseda Symphony Orchestra Tokyo

At the 1978 Youth Orchestras International Competition, the Waseda Symphony Orchestra won the Gold Medal Herbert von Karajan. The way Karajan took care of young musicians, whereas they were non-professional, was very touching. In 1979 he was awarded the title of Emeritous PhD of the University. At this occasion, Herbert von Karajan conducted the orchestra during a public concert that took place in the Okuma room of the Waseda University.

Thereafter, the orchestra has been conducted by several world-renowned conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Ken’ichiro Kobayashi, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Lenard Slatkin, Giuseppe Sinopoli and many others. During its 13 international tours, the Waseda Symphony Orchestra Tokyo presented 162 concerts and is now performing for the 14th time in the most prestigious European halls.
