About
Diego Tosi was born in 1981. As a young child, he played piano before receiving his first violin lessons at the age of 5, with Philippe Couvert. He continued his studies at the Perpignan-Méditerranée Conservatory, taking master-classes with Jean Lenert.
In 1998, he enrolled at the Paris Conservatoire in the class of Jean-Jacques Kantorow and, three years later, obtained his degree with first class honours. He also attended the master-classes of Alexandre Bendersky before going to the United States for advanced study, thanks to a Lavoisier grant, with Miriam Fried at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. He completed this course in two years, earning the Performer Diploma, after which he returned to the Paris Conservatoire for the graduate cycle.
During those early years, he won successive First Prizes at the international competitions in Canet and Moscow and the ‘Avant Scène’ Competition in 2004 before being awarded First Prize at the Valentino Bucchi International Competition in Rome. Successively solo violin with the Orchestre of the Paris Conservatoire, first violin in the French Youth Orchestra, principal in the Camérata de France and solo violin with the Conservatoire Orchestra (Emmanuel Krivine session), in October 2006, he was named solo violin with the prestigious Ensemble Intercontemporain, receiv-ing the congratulations of Pierre Boulez on that occasion.
He began his exclusive recording contract with the Solstice label in 2003 with a Sarasate anthology, followed in 2005 by an homage to Berio with a programme including works by Boulez, Xenakis, Ballif, et al. His third CD, devoted to Ravel’s violin works, was released in June 2006.
In the framework of MIDEM 2008, he appeared at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, giving the world premiere of Giacinto Scelsi’s Divertimento 4 for the occasion.
Since December 2009, he is the new Artistic Director of Music Festival Tautavel.
