Program notes

Violin virtuoso Renaud Capuçon and piano star Bertrand Chamayou join François-Xavier Roth and his acclaimed period-instrument ensemble Les Siècles to take us around the world with the music of Camille Saint-Saëns!

The French master's music—including some famous works and some gems you may not have heard before—is on glorious, globe-trotting display here. In addition to music from the opera Le Timbre d'argent, which Les Siècles revived in 2017 over a century after its last performance, we hear the composer's evocations of Africa in the piano fantasia Africa and "Egyptian" Piano Concerto with Chamayou, take a tour of Greek mythology in symphonic poems Phaeton and The Youth of Hercules, marvel at the beloved violin showpiece Introduction and Rondo capriccioso with Capuçon, and finish in deliciously sinister territory with the diabolical Danse macabre
