Written at the impressive age of 24, Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville is an opera that has earned itself a spot in the greatest halls of the world and the hearts of opera goers since its creation in 1816 in Rome. The opera buffa par excellence, according to none other than Verdi, is a gem of 19th century belcanto. As shown by commercial adoption and popular success of some of its melodies—notably the world-famous overture, or the Figaro’s aria “Largo al factotum”—The Barber of Seville has left an impact over the centuries. The opera has captivated audiences thanks to its undeniable comic wit, musical innovations and memorable characters, all deftly crafted by the pens of Rossini and Cesare Sterbini. The musical adaptation of Beaumarchais’ eponymous comedy is one of the best examples of staged musical story-telling.
