People today enjoy instrumental music on the silver screen, or at home on their TV sets, as much as in the concert hall. Among the many genres created by new technologies, cinema and television music have become a remarkably fertile ground for talented composers wishing to reach mass audiences, earning an exalted place in the cultural zeitgeist of the 20th and 21st centuries. For many, John Williams's themes for Jaws or Star Wars are every bit as iconic as the opening motif of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Williams, along with other award-winning figures like Thomas Newman, Hans Zimmer, Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone, Rachel Portman, Howard Shore, and Danny Elfman, often employ techniques similar to those of their classical forebears, using leitmotifs to personify characters or relationships and crafting everything from sparse solo and chamber works to epic, large-scale orchestral pieces with forces to rival those of Mahler.
