In Alain Planès, l'infini turbulent ("turbulent infinity"), violinist-filmmaker Dominique Lemonnier (alias Solrey) explores the life and art of the great Alain Planès. From his beginnings as a child prodigy to his encounter with Menahem Pressler to his work as the pianist of Pierre Boulez's Ensemble Intercontemporain, Planès has never ceased to surprise and inspire. This insightful and affectionate documentary gives us a penetrating glimpse at this one-of-a-kind musician.
Known for an insatiable curiosity matched only by his incredible talent, the virtuoso pianist Alain Planès is the subject of Dominique Lemonnier's first full-length documentary. The intimate portrait examines the inspirations that shaped Planès—from encounters with giants like Joan Miró, Pierre Boulez, Menahem Pressler, and Rudolf Serkin, to personal passions for painting and poetry—and the abilities that enabled him to bridge the divides between classical and contemporary repertoire in his work. A fascinating documentary film honored by both Montréal's FiFa and the Festival of Lisbon, its premiere took place in 2016, in tandem with a recital at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord and a ceremony in which he was decorated by the Légion d'honneur.
