Dusapin's violin concerto Aufgang (Ascent) was performed this evening for the first time in France by the virtuoso Renaud Capuçon, who also gave the work's world premiere in March 2013 in Cologne. A true ambassador of French contemporary music, Dusapin is a prolific composer who has been awarded many prizes, including the Prix Symphonique de la SACEM in 1998 and two Victoires de la musique awards (including the "composer of the year" award in 2002). The evocative Aufgang, in which—in the composer's words—"the conflict between darkness and dazzlement becomes the driving force"—was commissioned by the Westdeutschen Rundfunks, the Fondation de l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Holland Festival and the Philharmonie de Paris, with the support of Pierre Bergé.
