О программе

With the next edition of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition just weeks away, join virtuoso pianist Dmitry Masleev, 2015 Competition First Prize winner, in a program perfectly suited to his considerable talents! He shares the stage with the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Michail Jurowski.

One needs to be nothing less than a virtuoso to tackle Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3, considered as one of the most difficult works ever composed for the instrument. The composer-pianist wrote the devilishly difficult piece in 1909, and the concerto proved so difficult that after the premiere performance, even Rachmaninov didn’t feel up to playing it again, refusing the adoring audience’s demands for an encore. The technical fireworks are followed by Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, a metaphysical work that its composer found difficult to complete: he depicts his doubts in the face of the divine before concluding: “Is it not better to throw oneself into faith? The program is excellent, as long as I can achieve it.”
