The Ballet of the Capitole de Toulouse presents The Firebird in a tribute to the revolutionary choreographer Maurice Béjart. The original ballet was premiered in 1910 by the Ballets Russes with Michel Fokine’s choreography and Stravinsky’s music (as commissioned by Diaghilev). The work was the composer’s first great ballet, and its popularity has been enduring! In 1970, Maurice Béjart undertook a project to modernize the tale by recasting the bird as the leader of a revolutionary revolt. “Maurice Béjart experiments with characters that are sometimes figurative or abstract.
