About

A percussionist at the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Hugues Tremblay got in 2001 with unanimous support the 1st prize of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. Afterwards he studied under the care of Serge Desgagné at the Université de Montréal to prepare postgraduate studies in percussions and orchestral repertoire. Like Andrei Malashenko, Hugues Tremblay had the opportunity to improve alongside Louis Charbonneau, who had been timpanist of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal during several decades. He has also been taught by Rainer Seegers, timpanist in the Berliner Philharmoniker and by Werner Thärichen who had been principal timpanist of the Berliner Philharmoniker in particular at the times it was conducted by Herbert von Karajan.

Hugues Tremblay received in 1998 a grant by the Canada Council for the Arts. Since he began his career, he played and made recordings with most of the professional orchestras of Quebec. He performed in Europe, USA, Canada but also in Asia. He has been in particular a soloist timpanist invited by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and a timpanist of the Orchestre mondial des jeunesses musicales in the context of Asian and European tours in 1998.

Hugues Tremblay is currently a teacher at the École des petits musiciens Joseph-François-Perrault and at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. He continues his career as a musician with the orchestra of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal.
