Jean Sibelius’s luminous Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82, is one of the most popular works in his symphonic repertoire. Commissioned by the Finnish government to celebrate the composer’s fiftieth birthday, it premiered on December 8, 1915, in Helsinki–the very day of his birthday, which had been declared a national holiday–under Sibelius’s own baton. The original version of the symphony consisted of four movements, but the composer, known for his perfectionism and dissatisfaction, began revising the work in 1916, before World War I and the Finnish War of Independence interrupted his work. It was not until 1919 that he completed the final three-movement version that premiered again in Helsinki under Sibelius’s direction. After a long process of condensation and refinement, the 1919 version remains the most frequently performed version today.
Optimism, Triumph, and Nordic Light: the Symphony
Symphony No. 5 opens with a “Tempo molto moderato,” in which the horn call and radiant woodwind dialogue establishes the tone of the movement. In the final version of the symphony, this movement brings together material that had originally belonged to two separate movements. The next movement, a more subdued Andante mosso, quasi allegretto, calls back to a serene pastoral scene before being driven forward by the horn theme in Allegro molto. Sibelius wrote in his diary that watching sixteen swans flying overhead was one of the greatest days of his life and the inspiration for this movement. Composed in a Finland marked by political turmoil from World War I and the struggle for independence, Symphony No. 5 nevertheless exudes a remarkable optimism that stands in stark contrast to the darker introspection of Sibelius’s Symphony No. 4.
